SAFEGUARD YOUR FREE MOVEMENT AND RESIDENCY RIGHTS AFTER BREXIT.
THIS INFORMATION IS IN LINE WITH THE MESSAGING CURRENTLY BEING SENT OUT ISLAND WIDE BY THE BRITISH HIGH COMMISSION.
Unless an MEU application is lodged by 31st Oct, Immigration will not process application
THE MAIN POINTS ARE:
a. MEU 1 status is for those with under 5 years Residency
In line with Cyprus Immigration Law, any EU MS national who has resided in the Republic of Cyprus for a minimum of three months should apply for MEU1 Residency Documents in order to register their residency status with the Cypriot Immigration Authorities.
b. Those with MEU1 status, after 5 years
Should apply to replace their MEU1 documents with MEU3 documents. MEU 3 permanent residency status provides a British National with further security for life.
c. MEU 3
Residency status will safeguard the residency and free movement rights of British Residents in Cyprus for life.
d. Registration with the Cyprus Government Health System (GESY) requires MEU residency status. Without MEU1 or MEU3 residency documents, British nationals cannot register with GESY to receive medication or treatment through the General Health System. This means that costly private healthcare will be the only option for UK nationals without MEU residency status after Brexit.
e. In a No Deal, after Brexit, British Nationals who have not regularised their status i.e. applied for MEU1 or MEU3 will be subject to the Republic of Cyprus Immigration rules for Third Country Nationals. This may include the application of the 90 days (in every 180 days) maximum visa-free stay on island. Overstaying this maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period will be a violation of Cyprus’ immigration rules for third country nationals and may result in difficulties when leaving or re-entering a Republic of Cyprus legal port of entry.
f. NO MEU means no exchange of driving licenses can/will be possible
In order to safeguard their rights after Brexit all British Nationals who are resident in the Republic of Cyprus should apply for MEU1 or MEU3 residency documents. Beyond the matter of Brexit, Republic of Cyprus Law states that any EU citizen who is resident on island beyond three months MUST register with the Cypriot Authorities. This legislation has been in place since 2004 when Cyprus entered the E.U.
